HMRC Registrations for Businesses and Individuals

Starting to trade, forming a company, taking on staff or crossing the VAT threshold each brings a separate registration with HMRC, and each has its own time limit. Sterling Crest Accountants identifies which registrations you need, completes them as your agent where appropriate, and tells you what HMRC will send you and what happens next.

Sterling Crest Accountants provides this service to clients throughout the United Kingdom. Consultations are arranged in advance by telephone or online meeting. Our registered office is in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

About HMRC registrations

Self Assessment registration is needed when you start working for yourself or have other income HMRC needs to know about. Sole traders register as self employed, which also sets up Class 4 National Insurance. You receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference used for all future returns.

A new company is told its Corporation Tax reference by HMRC after incorporation, but it must still tell HMRC when it starts to do business. Where the company pays salaries, including to directors, it normally needs to register as an employer for PAYE before the first payday.

VAT registration is compulsory when taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12 month period, or is expected to in the next 30 days. Voluntary registration is possible below the threshold. Construction businesses register with HMRC as contractors, subcontractors or both under the Construction Industry Scheme.

Registering late can lead to penalties, backdated liabilities or tax deducted at a higher rate. We check the effective dates and information required before each application is made.
